TSB Website and App Down

TSB’s online and app-based banking services appear to be experiencing problems, leaving customers unable to complete transactions and check their balances since midday Tuesday.

Customers took to social media to register their complaints, with many reporting seeing “unexpected errors” when they try to log into TSB’s platforms or send money.

TSB acknowledged the outages. A spokesperson said: “We're aware some customers are currently experiencing problems across our mobile app and Internet Banking. We're working to solve this as soon as possible and apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

Some TSB branches are still open during the national lockdown, but most shut at 5 pm. The bank’s phone lines are open from 8 am to 8 pm, but customers could face lengthy waits to speak to a representative.

Reliance on digital banking during the pandemic has made the outage even more disruptive.

In June, TSB reported that daily registrations for its mobile banking service had nearly tripled since the beginning of the first lockdown in March. Enrolments for internet banking rose 137% over the same period.

The transition to digital banking, accelerated by the pandemic, has prompted TSB to announce it will shutter 164 branch locations in 2021. The closures will leave TSB with just 290 remaining branches, just over half the 536 locations it had at the beginning of 2019.

The recent outage may remind some TSB customers of the bank’s disastrous digital blackout in April 2018, when a botched IT migration locked more than 1.9 million customers out of their accounts for up to two weeks.

TSB ultimately ended paying customers more than £370 million in compensation and also facing multimillion-pound tabs for fraud, waived fees and charges and additional resources as a result of the meltdown, one of the worst to hit the UK banking sector.
