Any driver van insurance

Any driver van insurance can be a great way to save money if you are using a van for a commercial business. It allows drivers to add multiple people to their policy so that they can all drive one van legally. This guide will take you through all you need to know before taking out any driver van insurance, and outline some alternative ways you can save money as well.

In This Guide:

What is any driver van insurance?

Quite simply, this insurance allows multiple people to drive your van legally. It doesn’t mean literally ‘any’ driver can drive it, but that there will be a number of listed drivers that can use the van. In rare cases, providers can give insurance which does not require the drivers to be named. In these instances there will still be some restrictions, such as they have to be over the age of 25.

Who can get any driver van insurance?

The most common reason for someone to take out this policy is that they own a business which requires several employees to use a single van. You can also purchase any driver insurance on your personal policy as well.

How does any driver van insurance work?

There are two quite simple ways that you can get any driver van insurance. Firstly, you can add each driver specifically one at a time. Or secondly, you can choose the ‘any driver’ option when you are purchasing insurance, which will allow you to have multiple people insured without having to contact the insurer every time.

Pros and cons:

Advantages

  • If you don’t want to purchase (or can’t afford) multiple vans it can be very useful and save you money overall.
  • It might be an attractive option if you have a high turnover of staff, allowing you to have new drivers without having to go back to your insurance provider.
  • If you are planning to share this cover with someone more experienced, it could reduce your premium as the insurer will assume you will spend less time driving. However, it’s important to note that it is illegal to put someone down as the primary driver if they aren’t in fact the main driver, a process called ‘fronting’.

Disadvantages

There can be a few disadvantages to any driver cover, really depending on what sort of cover you specifically need:

  • It will be more expensive than simply having one driver insured. This means you might not need to purchase any driver van insurance if you are using it for personal use.
  • Using just one van can limit the amount of work you can get done should you be using the van for a commercial business. It’s important therefore to weigh up the costs and benefits before you take out an any driver policy.
  • Often insurers will restrict any driver cover by age. Generally this will mean restrictions if you are under 21, or even sometimes under 25!

Is any driver cover the same as multi-van insurance?

No, multi-van insurance is when one person is insured on multiple vans. Any driver van insurance is when multiple people are insured on one van.

Alternative ways to save money on van insurance

  • Compare quotes: the clearest and most common way of saving money on van insurance is to compare quotes from multiple providers. You can try using our free online van insurance comparison tool to get quotes, compare the options and find the best deal.
  • Security: the more secure your van is, the more likely your insurance premium will go down. There are multiple ways to secure your van, such as parking it in a garage or installing a more comprehensive alarm system.
  • Voluntary excess: if you agree with your provider to pay a larger excess in the event of damage to the vehicle, they will reduce your premium. Just make sure that you can afford that excess if the you do need to make a claim.
  • Black box insurance: installing a black box will monitor your driving and report this back to the insurer. If you are classed as a safe driver, for instance sticking to the speed limit, they will reduce your premiums.
  • Marking your van: when vans have personalised branding on them they are viewed as a lower risk of theft. This could therefore lower your premium and also give you cheap advertising!
