Free Wills Month UK - How to Get Your Will Written for Free
Writing a will might not be at the top of your list, but it’s the only way to make sure your money, property, and possessions go to the right people when you die. Twice a year, in March and October, Free Wills Month gives people aged 55 and over the chance to get a simple will written or updated by a solicitor for free.
Liz Hunter, our Commercial Director at Money Expert, has provided all the information you need to know.
What is Free Wills Month?
Free Wills Month is a UK-wide campaign that helps people over 55 get their will written at no cost. The costs are covered by charities taking part in the scheme. While you’re not required to leave a gift to charity, many people choose to.
If you live in Scotland, Will Relief Scotland runs each September. Instead of being fully funded, you’re asked to make a donation to one of its partner charities.
How Does Free Wills Month Work?
- Find a participating solicitor near you.
- Book quickly, spaces are limited and fill fast.
- Answer questions about your assets, debts, children, and who should inherit.
- Have your will drafted, usually within a single appointment.
Free Wills Month only covers simple wills. If your estate is worth more than £325,000 or your situation is complex, your solicitor may charge a fee.
Why Should You Write a Will?
Having a will ensures:
- Your estate goes to the people or charities you choose.
- Guardianship is clear for your children.
- Pets are cared for.
- Family disputes are avoided.
Without a will, your estate is divided under the rules of intestacy, meaning unmarried partners or step-children won’t inherit, and the courts could decide who looks after your children.
Where Should You Store Your Will?
You can keep your will:
- At home (risky if lost).
- With your solicitor (usually safest).
- With the Probate Service (£20 fee).
- With a will writing service (check protections carefully).
Always make sure your executor knows where it is.
Can You Write Your Own Will?
DIY will kits are legally valid if signed and witnessed correctly. They may work if you’re leaving everything to a partner or children.
But for anything more complex, a solicitor is safer. Mistakes in homemade wills can make them invalid, creating financial and emotional problems for your loved ones.
Free Wills Month is the perfect opportunity to write or update your will if you’re 55 or over. It gives you peace of mind, protects your family, and ensures your estate is passed on according to your wishes,
