Barclays Debit Card Customers Can Opt in to Receive Digital Receipts from Retailers

The death knell may be ringing for paper receipts, as Barclays launches a service that sends digital receipts directly to customers’ smartphones.

Barclays is partnering with fintech startup Flux, a graduate of its accelerator programme, to end the days of rummaging through wadded up paper receipts at the bottom of your bag.

Initially, Barclays current account customers who make purchases with their debit card in-store at H&M and Shuh and at Just Eat and Papa Johns eateries can have receipts for those purchases sent directly to their phones. To view those receipts, customers simply have to tap on the transaction with the Barclays app and then click to view an itemised receipt.

Barclays says the service will expand to more retailers in the coming months and provide convenience for a customer base that has increasingly embraced digital banking solutions.

Ruchir Rodrigues, global head of digital & platforms at Barclays, said: “The pandemic has shown an increasing desire among consumers for the safety and security offered by a low-touch environment which digital receipts, along with other solutions such as contactless payments, enable.

“The introduction of the digital receipts feature in the Barclays app gives customers a way to conveniently get an itemised receipt of their purchase straight into their app, offering them greater control and ease when managing their money.”

James Bain, head of technology procurement at Just Eat, said: “We are always looking at how we can improve the experience for our customers, so we are excited to be able to offer our customers digital receipts when they pay using a Barclays debit card. Digital receipts makes it easy for our customers to locate their receipts and easily view what they have ordered from us.”

There are financial incentives for retailers to adopt digital receipts. They hand out 11.2 billion till receipts each year, at a total cost of £32 million.

At least half of those receipts are printed on thermal paper, which can’t be recycled and also contains substances which are harmful to human health and have already been banned from plastic water bottles and sip cups.

Barclays current account customers can opt into the service by logging into their Barclays app, clicking on ‘Products’ at the bottom of the homepage and then tapping ‘Digital Receipts’ under ‘Our Services.’
