Do I need caravan insurance?
Unlike car insurance, caravan insurance is not mandatory, but a specialist insurance policy could offer you financial protection if something happens to your caravan. Typically caravan sites will request a minimum level of cover, such as public liability, to be able to have your caravan there.
What are the different types of caravan insurance?
There are two types of caravan insurance for tourers & statics;
New for old – If your caravan is damaged beyond economic repair or stolen, new for old cover will pay out the value of a brand new, equivalent model, providing the sums insured reflects the value of the caravan new.
Market value – If your caravan is damaged beyond economic repair or stolen, Market values pays out the current value of your caravan, providing the sums insured reflects the value of the caravan as it is at the tie of the claim. For example, if your caravan is 15 years old, the pay out would be the going rate for a similar model of that age & condition.
What is included in caravan insurance?
Theft - If your caravan is stolen while it’s detached from your car, either parked at its storage location or in use at a campsite or caravan park.
Burglary - If your caravan is broken into and some of its contents are stolen or damaged.
Internal damage - Following an accident (for example, a water leak).
External damage - Either when it’s parked or being towed.
Third party liability - If you injure a member of the public or cause damage to someone’s property following an accident.
Written off - If your caravan is involved in an accident and damaged beyond repair. Your insurance may be able to cover the cost of a hire caravan or alternative accommodation.
What is not included in caravan insurance?
Always check your policy for what you’re insurance will cover, things that maynot be covered include:
Damage or theft because of a lack of security, e.g. no wheelclamps or hitchlocks, leaving windows open etc.
Theft when the caravan isn’t stored at its registered storage location(s).
Damage caused by everyday wear and tear.
Damage caused by insect or vermin infestation.
Mildew damage.
Storage at a non-approved location.
Every caravan is unique so always check your policy thoroughly to see exactly what you are covered for.
