How to save money on your Entertainment Subscription Services
Signing up for subscription services can be convenient and make life easier or more entertaining, but the costs can also add up very quickly. From streaming platforms to apps and memberships, many households spend hundreds of pounds each year on services they barely use. Liz Hunter, Commercial Director at Money Expert, shares practical ways you can cut costs and make your money go further.
Check for Surprise Subscriptions
Review your bank account regularly to spot unused or forgotten subscriptions. A quick weekly check can help you cancel what you don’t need and catch any unexpected charges.
Review and Compare Deals
Make a list of your current subscriptions and ask: Do I use it enough? Is it worth the cost? If not, cancel it. Also, check for discounts, free versions, or cheaper packages – you can often save by switching plans or negotiating with providers.
Use Family or Duo Plans
Many services like Spotify and Apple Music offer family or couple plans, which work out much cheaper than paying for separate accounts.
Try “Leapfrogging”
Instead of juggling multiple streaming services, rotate them. Subscribe to one at a time based on what you want to watch, then cancel and move to the next. Planning ahead can save you over £100 a month.
Consider Cancelling, Strategically
Sometimes starting the cancellation process triggers a discount offer from the provider. Just remember to set reminders so you’re not caught out when prices rise again.
Make the Most of Free Trials
Take advantage of free trials, but always set a reminder to cancel before you’re charged. In some cases, cancelling immediately still lets you use the trial until it ends.
Look for Promo Codes and Discounts
Before signing up, search for promotional codes or special discounts like student or annual plans. Paying annually can often be cheaper than paying monthly if you can afford the upfront cost.
