Insurance No claims Discounts
How do no claims affect car insurance prices?
No claims discounts are earned through driving without making any sort of claim to your car insurance company. A claim constitutes either a fault or none fault claim, this would include crashing in wet conditions or your car being stolen respectively.
How do my no claims affect my car insurance quote?
A no claims discount of 5 years works out at approximately 60-65% of the insurance premium. This can make a huge difference to the overall cost of your insurance and is provided as a bonus to careful drivers.
Can I protect my no claims bonus?
A no claims bonus can only be protected after you have earned 5 or more years of no claims bonus. By protecting you’re no claims bonus you have a buffer available which protects you from losing any no claims discount in the event of theft or an accident. If you have more than 1 claim in a short period of time however you’re no claims bonus will be at risk.
What If I have an accident and my NCB is NOT protected?
This differs between insurance companies, in the event of a crash or theft of your vehicle some insurance companies might take some or all of your no claims discount off you. This is generally available to drivers who have the maximum number of years no claims bonus but do not have their bonuses protected. In this instance many companies will “step back” your insurance from 4 or 5 years down to 2 years.
Is protecting no claims discounts worth it?
The cost of taking our no claims bonus protection is in general much less than the difference in price a car insurance policy would be with 2 and 5 years NCB.
Can I earn no claims bonuses quicker?
Some companies offer 10 month policies whereby you can earn a no claims bonus to your car insurance quicker than if you had a 12 month policy. While in theory this sounds like a good idea you should make sure to read all the terms and conditions of the policy, some insurance companies will not honour NCB which has been accelerated by another insurer.
I own 2 cars; do I earn no claims discounts on both?
The short answer is no, if you wish to earn no claims discounts on both cars they must be insured separately. You cannot share a NCB between 2 different vehicles. If you have earned some no claims discounts why not see how much your bonus affects your Car Insurance quotes with Money Expert.
