UK capital ‘worst for car crime’

London has been named as the most likely place for your a vehicle to be targetted by thieves, new research by Admiral has shown.

Four of the city’s districts were among the top ten most problematic areas. Hackney was named as the worst, with one in five insurance claims involving car crime. It was followed by Clapham and Leyton. Scottish and southern England areas were revealed to have the lowest levels of car crime.

“We expect car crime to be higher in inner city areas, but it’s surprising to see,” said Admiral managing director Sue Longthorn.

“The sad fact is that people living in big cities are more likely to be victims of car crime.”

She explained that individuals can make themselves less vulnerable to car crime and keep their car insurance premiums low by effectively securing their vehicles, leaving no valuables on show.

According to the Association of British Insurers’ the private motor industry was worth £10.3 billion in 2006.
