Car Insurance Cost Driven Up By Stress
New research has revealed that the cost of car insurance is being affected by problems in our everyday lives, with car owners admitting that they risk their safety and the safety of others by driving while under stress.
The poll of 3,000 drivers by Admiral car insurance found that more than half (56%) knowingly get behind the wheel of their vehicle while stressed about something in their lives, with the same percentage admitting that it can cause them to feel road rage.
Almost half (44%) of those quizzed said they use driving in an attempt to reduce stress, by clearing their head. However, more 37% confessed to driving more erratically when worried about something, and almost half (45%) conceded they are more likely to lose concentration when they are in this state.
This stress manifests itself in a number of different ways, with a fifth of the drivers saying it made them drive more aggressively, 12% saying they noticed their speed increase and 6% believing it made them drive slower – which in some cases can be just as hazardous.
All of the manifestations are common causes of accidents on the road, which in turn drives up the cost of car insurance.
Health Psychologist, David Moxon believes the key to avoiding such habits is all about attitude and control.
“It’s a good idea to start to understand your own stress,” he said. “Think about what triggers make you anxious and stressed. Often when people feel this way they start to convince themselves there is nothing they can do to change the situation. This actually couldn’t be further from the truth.
“Managing stress is all about taking control – being in control of your emotions, thoughts and behaviours.”
