Homeowners try to ‘balance basic bills’

Many homeowners are struggling with the increasing costs of basic household bills, it has been suggested.

The Citizens Advice Bureaux has warned that an increasing number of people are finding it difficult to meet the cost of utility bills due to price hikes in recent months.

Furthermore, the body stated that in the first two months of 2008, the number of homeowners having problems with mortgage arrears leapt by 35 per cent compare to the same period last year.

“The combination of big increases in household bills, especially fuel, and rising housing costs is putting additional pressure on peopleís finances when in many cases they are already stretched to the limit,” a spokesperson for the bureaux said.

Consumer inflation rose to three per cent from 2.5 per cent between March and April, while the Retail Price Index stands at 4.2 per cent.
