Widespread flooding around Britain as a result of heavy rains has caused millions of pounds in damage and seen insurance claims surge, it has been reported.
According to Halifax, its average claims volume had doubled by Tuesday afternoon, while Abbey said that it had received around 8,600 claims – more than half of the estimated 13,700 it receives each year.
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has advised car insurance customers to check the terms of their policy carefully.
Drivers were advised that third-party car insurance will not be sufficient to cover natural occurrences such as flood damage.
The ABI said that drivers who do not have fully comprehensive car insurance may first have to pay for repairs out of their own pocket before assessing what, if any, claims they can make.
