Drivers ‘confused’ over car insurance

Many British drivers are confused by what their car insurance does and does not cover, it has been claimed.

Research by found that two-fifths of motorists did not know that driving over their mileage would affect their insurance.

Nearly a third (29 per cent) of drivers also thought that they would automatically be covered when using a friend’s car, whereas the firm warned that this is rare.

In addition, 65 per cent of motorists eat behind the wheel and 36 per cent smoke, although they could be caught out for negligence if an accident occurred.

A tenth of motorists said their car insurance would cover them if they put the wrong kind of fuel into their car, whereas the firm warned many insurers do not.

“While choosing the lowest price car insurance policy is most people’s objective, it is also important to know what is and what isn’t covered,” said Tina Shortle of

Ms Shortle warned that drivers should always read the terms and conditions and regularly review their policy.

The firm has found that if UK car owners shopped around for the best insurance policy online they could save up to £1.9 billion a year.
