A right royal waste of money

Prince William’s been taking some flak for landing a Chinook (the double-rotary bladed helicopter) in the back garden of long term girlfriend Kate Middleton.

The heir-borne Prince made the trip from RAF Odiham, Hants, to Kate’s family home in Bucklebury, Bucks. Unfortunately RAF top brass have not been impressed with some believing the 2-hour trip could have cost the tax-payer as much as £30,000.

Not many of us get the opportunity for such grandiose displays but there are plenty of bad drivers on the roads collectively costing us considerably more than £30,000 with reckless antics of their own.

With bad drivers the bane of many a motorist’s daily journey MoneyExpert.com gives some top advice on how to avoid paying the financial penalty for someone else’s mistakes.

Uninsured drivers

The Government believes there are as many as 2 million vehicles on the road without adequate insurance, and for those unlucky enough to have an accident with one of them the costs can be huge. The Motor Insuers’ Bureau (MIB), the body responsible for paying compensation to those involved in such accidents, claims to pay out around £500 million a year.

Unfortunately, other than applying to the MIB, there’s often very little a motorist can do when hit by an uninsured driver. If they have comprehensive cover then their insurer will pay for the damages but they’re still likely to lose their no claims bonus, and will typically have to pay the excess.

However, some policies do offer specific cover against uninsured drivers, with clauses included to protect your no claims bonus.

The devil’s in the detail

Sadly there’s very little you can do to protect against bad drivers other than ensuring that your own car insurance policy is in good order.

However if you are in an accident and it’s not your fault it’s very important to take down as many details as possible, many from the other driver. These include:
– The make and registration of his / her car
– His / her contact details
– The type of damage done to both vehicles
– Any unusual signs or road markings
– The contact details of any potential witnesses

Getting your house in good order

Ultimately the best way to avoid any car insurance anguish is to ensure that your policy is up to scratch and giving you the best deal available. With so many online providers, as well as the more traditional insurers now competing for business there are literally hundreds of deals on offer.
To make sure you’re not paying too much for too little it’s important to shop around and compare quotes, and MoneyExpert.com is the best place to start.
