Dental health suffers as Brits tighten the purse strings

Brits are putting off visits to the dentist over concerns about the cost of the visit, leading to fears of the state of dental hygiene in the UK generally.

Despite many households’ finances being squeezed, investing in private medical insurance is still a choice many Brits are making.

Research by healthcare company SimplyHealth has revealed that one in five people have not been to the dentist in 18 months or more.

“With 22% of those people that have visited the dentist receiving bills of over £300, and 44% of these paying for the treatment by credit card, it is vital that individuals plan how to cover these costs,” said James Glover, spokesperson for Simplyhealth.

“Dental plans and cash plans are a great way of helping individuals and families to spread the cost of visiting the dentist, ensuring dental care is affordable even when finances don't allow.”

More than a fifth of people have said they avoid the dentist because of the costs incurred, while one in ten are worried the cost will be too high because they have not been for a long time.

“During difficult financial times when every expenditure is scrutinised, perceived value for money for individuals is essential,” added Mr Glover.

“Our survey shows that this is not always the case with dentistry, as only half believe that visiting the dentist is very good or fairly good value for money.”

Experts are urging people to make the most of their visits to the dentist, to increase the value for money of each visit.

“By using your time with your dentist to talk about things like stopping smoking, the removal of wisdom teeth and childhood dental health you are more likely to feel that you are receiving good value for money,” said Michael Thomas, a dental advisor at Simplyhealth.

  • I was asked to pay up front a total of £48 for treatment that I am having to wait a month for, is this the norm now as I havent had to do it before.. I am not impressed !! I think the charges are high and the quality of service is not as good as it used to be, especially if you are older the dentists dont seem interested, and as for having a chat... from my experience they want you out asap..
