What is a 0% card? It is a card that, for an agreed period of time, does not charge any interest on certain transactions. The transactions that a card can offer 0% interest periods on are balance transfers, purchases or in some case both. Some cards offer 0% purchase rates for a shorter time than the balance transfer period and these should be viewed with caution. If you do not want to pay any interest and have transferred a balance to these cards do not use for purchases. If you do purchase something on the card the money you pay each month generally goes towards paying the lowest interest bearing credit first, which would be the 0% balance transfer debt, then any purchases you have made and if you had any cash advances these generally are paid off last as they incur the highest interest rates. Forewarned is fore armed.
When an interest free period comes to an end the rate of interest will increase to the typical APR rate and as these vary greatly from card to card it is always worth including this information in any 0% credit card comparison you carry out. You may forget that your interest free period has ended and fail to move to another card with a 0% deal or pay off the balance and end up incurring interest charges. Accidents do happen but you don’t want a high APR to be yours!
