What do you need to look out for?
What type of insurance cover do you require? Comprehensive will cost more but is that what you really need? Always take care with policies to ensure you have everything you need.
Have you built up a large no claims bonus? It’s taken a while to build up so do you want to protect it? Make sure you research the difference in costs and check you’ve all the information you need to make an informed decision.
Do you require legal protection? How will you afford legal representation if you are in an accident and need to recover an uninsured loss or if someone makes a claim against you how will you cover legal bills?
What will you do if you breakdown in the middle of the night? Have you already got cover or someone you can call on?
If your car is off the roads for any length of time how will you get to work or carry out your weekly shop? Without a courtesy car inclusion in your policy will you be able to get about on public transport?
Excess? Before your insurer pays out in a claim they will deduct the amount of excess agreed in your policy. Agreeing to pay a larger amount may mean that your premium is less but make sure you won’t be left struggling with your bills if the unexpected happens.
Purchase online? Most insurers give a discount for any policies purchased online. Always read the small print and check your documents thoroughly when they come through!

Different insurers seem to charge different premiums – why is this?
Dependant on the insurer different risk assessments are applied to a persons quote. Some insurance providers specialise in certain types of people - like Saga who cover the over 50s market. Strangely a quote can vary on the time of day that you search as some companies may decide that they have filled thir quotas of one particular type of business – e.g. 20 year old students and the price will go up for the rest of the day! So to be sure you have the best quote always shop around and compare lots of quotes!
