30m Brits 'managed to save' in 2008

Over 30 million Britons have managed to add something to their savings this year despite the credit crunch, research has shown.
A survey by Alliance & Leicester has revealed that approximately 31 million people put some money into their savings accounts in 2008 during "turbulent" conditions.
However, it also found that 13.5 million people had not managed to save anything at all, with half of this group saying they regret it now.
The research discovered that 18 per cent of people had been forced to dip into their savings to meet extra costs in the wake of the economic downturn.
And 12 per cent did save some money but then went out and spent it.
Manager for savings at the firm Hetal Parmar commented: "What's surprising is the number of people who still haven't put any money aside … I would urge them to follow the example set by the majority by building a nest egg for themselves."
Recently, Newcastle Building Society launched new Reward Saver and ISA accounts.
