Conservatives pledge to increase affordable homes

Those wishing to get a mortgage may be affected by new changes in planning regulations that an incoming Conservative government would introduce, with the party claiming this will increase the construction of affordable homes.
Launching its new policy for planning regulations, the Conservatives said the new arrangements would see less bureaucracy and centrally-imposed targets, with more decisions taken at a local level instead.
It would also incentivise local authorities to provide more affordable homes through central government paying them 125 per cent of the value of each new unit per year for six years.
The plan was welcomed by housing charity Shelter, whose director of policy and campaigns Kay Boycott said the lack of affordable homes was having a damaging effect on family life.
She stated: "Almost two and a half million people are actively putting off having children and one in five young people are still living at home because of high housing costs."
