Over a fifth of young drivers consider taking to the roads without insurance

12/10/2011

Young drivers are being priced out of the market as insurance premiums continue to increase. Many are considering taking matters into their own hands and getting behind the wheel without any insurance at all.

New research from an insurer has found that over a fifth of risky young drivers under the age of 25 are prepared to break the law to avoid high insurance premiums.

21% of young drivers would consider driving without insurance due to the higher cost of motoring.

The survey of over 1,000 drivers found that a staggering 42% of young drivers have changed the information they provided to an insurance firm in order to qualify for a cheaper policy. Overall, 22% said they have added another driver to their policy, 15% changed whether they were the main driver, 3% changed their employment information and 2% even changed information regarding their address.

More than half of young drivers are not aware that after an accident, personal details are passed on by the insurance firm to a solicitor, car hire firm or garage.

“I am extremely concerned about these results, which show that young drivers think they are being priced off the road because of the high cost of motor insurance,” said Transport Committee Chair, Louise Ellman MP.

“It is shocking that so many young drivers are considering breaking the law – by driving without insurance or changing the details they provide to insurers – in order to get a cheaper premium.

“It’s revealing that most young drivers are also unaware that many insurers receive referral fees in order to deal with claims they make.”

The government is currently investigating the cost of motor insurance. Over the last year, the average cost of car insurance for drivers aged between 17 and 22 has risen 34% according to the research by the AA.
