CAB reveals record request for debt help
24/02/2010
Consumer charity Citizens Advice (CAB) has said that it has been dealing with record numbers of requests for financial help following the onset of the recession.
A total of 11 million debt, benefits, employment and housing issues spread among 3.25 million people have been dealt with by the CAB since the economic contraction began, with the last three months of 2009 including 1.7 million cases.
This figure was up by 20 per cent on the same period 12 months before, with many consumers struggling to meet utility bill payments as a result of their financial worries, while one in four people had overdraft problems.
Chief executive of the body David Harker said: "We may officially be in recovery, but for many people the damage done by the economic downturn is long-lasting and far from over."
Discussing the difficulty those struggling to stay within their overdrafts have, Consumer Credit Counselling Service helpline manager Laura Carver said such people should seek help as soon as possible.
