Savvy Celebrities

08/12/2011

We’ve often highlighted those who’ve been unfortunate with their overinflated wealth, however on occasion, a few of them invest wisely…

Elle Macpherson

Not just a pretty face (or body!), the Australian supermodel Elle Macpherson, boasts numerous bestselling fashion and keep-fit brands in her portfolio. Her biggest success was the 1990 launch of her Intimates lingerie range, which has become the UK’s best-selling fashion lingerie brand.

Robbie Fowler

Having played for Liverpool, Leeds and Manchester City, one time premier league striker, Robbie Fowler, often heard the chant “We all live in a Robbie Fowler house” during a game. That’s because he snapped up 100-plus buy-to-let properties while he was at the peak of his career and prices were low in the early 1990s. They now have an estimated worth of some £31 million!

George Foreman

According to showbiz legend, having missed a call from his agent, Hulk Hogan missed out on the opportunity to endorse a new electric grill from manufacturers Russell Hobbs. The product, now known as the George Foreman Lean Mean Fat Reducing Grilling Machine, was a runaway success that has made the one-time champion boxer super-rich.

Jack Nicholson

He may have starred in iconic films such as Easy Rider, The Shining and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, however the one that earnt him the big bucks was 1989’s Batman. According to US magazine Entertainment Weekly, he agreed to cut his usual fee (at the time) of £6.3 million down to £3.8 million in exchange for a share of Batman’s earnings – including sales of a range of merchandise bearing his face as The Joker.

A shrewd move – Nicholson reportedly took home £32 million from that single contract.

Jay-Z

Thought the record industry was dead? Jay-Z signed a reported £94 million deal with Live Nation after leaving his long-time record label Def Jam in 2008. Deemed to be one of the highest-paying deals ever given to a musician, the mega-contract goes beyond music sales and incorporates financing for his own entertainment company, Roc Nation, as well as a share of concert tickets. His other ventures include a chain of nightclubs and the Rocawear clothing line – the latter of which he sold for £128 million.
