Cheap Car Insurance Tips

23/09/2010

Recent research has found that even minor changes to car insurance policies could make considerable differences to what you pay.  Follow these tips on ways to find cheap car insurance.

For example, most car insurance providers charge customers administration fees for changing details on their policy like a change of address or marital status.  These charges also differ between providers with customers having to dish out anything between £18- £55.

Consumers are also at a loss when cancelling their insurance policy part way through the policy term losing a large chunk of their premium refund and even facing fees for doing so.  Bearing this in mind, those on the lookout for cheap car insurance should consider the following money saving tips when comparing the market.

Tips for Finding the Cheapest Car Insurance

•    A common problem when comparing car insurance is finding the right cover for the specific age group you fit into.  Young male drivers are the group likely to pay well over any other group for car insurance, especially in their first year of driving.  Although if you fit into this group you should expect to pay more than say your female counterparts or elders, you can still save money by comparing prices online.

•    Driving a car with a smaller engine will cut down on insurance premiums; this also includes a car without speed enhancing features such as turbo-charged cars, big spoilers, fat tyres and alloy rims.

•    The other golden rule of reducing your insurance policy is to purchase it online due to the variety of discounts available.  The Pass Plus exam is also a good way of reducing premiums where a young person or a new driver takes an extra course to learn how to drive on the motorway and at night time.

•    Compare different insurers depending on what category you most fit into, for example, some cater specifically for women over a certain age and offer a reduced rate.  The best money saving tip however is to drive carefully, keep to the speed limit and not to take any risks.

•    A large proportion of motor insurance policies provide specific cover for child car seats, although the details vary from insurer to insurer.  If this is something you need, investigate whether a policy provides a nominal sum to replace the seat or if they replace irrespective of whether any damage has been caused.  Also ask if the cash sum to cover the cost of an equivalent car seat would be enough to cover it and does the policy cover the replacement of more than one seat and if there is a limit to how many?
