Car insurance customers 'missing pothole payments'
28/04/2010
Car insurance customers have been advised to check their policies to see if they are able to make claims to cover the cost of repairs for damage caused by potholes.
Insight analyst at independent financial research firm Defaqto Mike Powell said: "Local authorities are still struggling to fill the vast amount of potholes that have been created from the severe winter so the problems for motorists are far from over."
Those who have a problem may be pleasantly surprised to find they can make a claim after a pothole-related incident.
According to Defaqto, drivers should be aware that policy exclusions may prevent claims on some results of such mishaps, while no-claims bonuses may be affected by making a claim.
The winter weather caused many potholes due to the freeze-thaw process of water expanding and cracking the road surface.
In his budget speech last month, chancellor of the Exchequer Alastair Darling announced an extra £100 million of funding to help councils tackle the problem.
