British Gas offers more 'smart meters'
30/03/2010
British Gas has announced plans to install two million 'smart meters' into UK homes by 2012, a measure it says will help people lower their bills.
The utility provider said this would happen because the devices would include real-time information on screen providing information about energy usage.
Such data could then be used by householders to work out how and when they are using the most power and seek to make cuts accordingly.
Commenting on the development, British Gas managing director Phil Bentley said: "We want all our customers to have smart meters as soon as possible, so they can take advantage of this technology and use it to help them cut their energy use, carbon emissions and fuel bills."
Energy prices as a whole have fallen recently, a trend seen across the developed world.
New figures from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development have shown that consumer prices inflation in its member countries in the year to February was 1.9 per cent, compared with 2.1 per cent in January.
The body said this drop was largely caused by cheaper domestic fuel prices.
