Many families are opting for a cheap August bank holiday trip by going camping - but they should check their insurance policy to prepare for any mishaps, according to the Fair Investment Company.
Spokesperson Rachael Stiles said campers should not assume that their home contents insurance will cover them against losses or theft.
The company pointed out that away from home cover is optional under most policies and advised holidaymakers to be vigilant as insurance companies may not pay out on items left unattended in a tent and stolen.
This is because it is the responsibility of the customer to "take every reasonable precaution to prevent loss or damage", Fair Investment stated.
Ms Stiles added: "We are urging those who are intending to get away this weekend to check their insurance, particularly if they are taking expensive items like iPods and laptops with them."
In June, the Independent named its 50 best camping sites - with the top three located in the UK.
