MoneyExpert.com - "Very wide range" of mortgages still available - 21/04/2008

Consumers looking for a competitive deal on a new mortgage still have a "very wide range" of options, according to the Building Societies Association.

Neil Johnson, PR and policy manager at the organisation, stated that despite there being a lot less products on the market, there are still some "very competitive" offers, especially from building societies.

He claimed that mortgages from building societies consistently appear on best-buy tables.

The Financial Services Authority has found that 1.4 million households will come to the end of their fixed-rate mortgage deals this year.

HSBC has recently announced that it will match interest rates on these deals for homeowners for two years for customers who successfully apply before the end of June.

"The HSBC offer is a very competitive one," said Mr Johnson. "It's what you would expect in the competitive mortgage market that we've got, where providers actually offer different products that will appeal to different customers."
