The number of vehicles with no car insurance policies on the roads is decreasing, according to figures from the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba).

Last year, around 150,000 vehicles without car insurance were seized by the police and 78,000 the previous year, the organisation states.

Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive for Biba, said that he believes uninsured driving rates have gone down by over ten per cent.

"Police have now got access to the motor insurance database and the power to seize uninsured vehicles," he explained. "There's also the automatic number plate reading cameras, similar to speed cameras."

These new cameras scan vehicle registration plates as they drive past and send a message to police if the car's insurance is not registered, he added.

The Motor Insurers' Bureau reports that uninsured drivers on UK roads cause 160 deaths on the road every year and 23,000 injuries.
