Officers are asking motorists to be careful when driving in longer periods of darkness as the clocks go back this weekend.
Northumbria Police are advising car-owners to check all headlights on their vehicle are working and to be vigilant about pedestrians, especially in early mornings or evenings when visibility is low.
"It can take a while for people to adjust to the darker nights and morning," said chief inspector Kevin Wellden.
"A few simple precautions and a little more care will help keep the roads safer for everyone."
He also advised that all pedestrians dress in brightly visible clothes and children and horse riders should wear reflective items.
According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, the clocks going back greatly affects the number of deaths from road accidents.
By driving safely and avoiding accidents, motorists could find that their car insurance premiums are cheaper.
