MoneyExpert.com - Young males present biggest insurance risk - 17/09/2007

Young male drivers present the biggest risk to insurers and consequently pay the most for their car insurance, it has been revealed.

According to Direct Line, one in three young male drivers writes off their car in their first year of driving.

And they are the most likely to cause and be victims of fatalities and serious injuries in road traffic accidents.

"That accounts for why the costs are so high - those who present higher risk pay a higher premium," said a spokesperson for the car insurance provider.

According to Department for Transport statistics released earlier this year, the number of casualties on British roads this year has gone down by four per cent when compared to the previous year.

A recent report from the transport select committee concluded that young male drivers are the single biggest killers of young women in the UK.
